Sheriff Jim Driscoll recently acknowledged that Coconino County is turning immigrant residents of Flagstaff and Coconino County over to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). And this has been going on for years.
We need your help to stop this — because it affects the safety of all residents of Flagstaff and Coconino County. Here's what you need to know:
¡THE COUNTY DOESN'T HAVE TO DO THIS!
The Sheriff says he can’t pick and choose what laws to enforce. In reality, he’s “enforcing” a voluntary request from ICE, not a law. He does not have to do that.
¡IMMIGRANTS HAVE RIGHTS, AND THOSE RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED!
Many people assume only citizens have rights under the U.S. Constitution. Instead, all residents have rights.
¡MISLEADING STATEMENTS LEAD TO FEAR AND CONFUSION!
You may hear people imply that only criminals are turned over to ICE. Some people even imply that most immigrants are criminals and ICE somehow protects us in criminal matters. All such statements are wrong.
¡FEAR MAKES US ALL LESS SAFE!
When immigrants fear that local law enforcement will turn them over to ICE, they are less likely to contact police, even to report crimes or cooperate in the investigation of crimes.
FOR ALL OF THESE REASONS, Sheriff Driscoll and the Coconino County Board of Supervisors were recently sued! But while the lawsuit makes its way through the courts. OUR CAMPAIGN GOES FORWARD!
PLEASE HELP US CONVINCE THE SHERIFF TO CHANGE THIS POLICY NOW — BY TAKING 4 CRUCIAL STEPS TO PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY.
We need Coconino County to honor the constitutional rights of all members of our community.
That means not honoring voluntary ICE requests, informing people in the jail that they don't have to talk to ICE, and not alerting ICE that someone is being released until the time of discharge.
That requires all of our voices!
